'Extraordinary determination' wins award for young engineer at NNL

Will, 30, a lead engineer and team manager for NNL, was presented with the Award during a ceremony in London. Will was recognised for his “extraordinary determination to achieve success for himself and for NNL”.

Will’s career got off to a promising start when he became the youngest ever delegate on NNL’s Management Development Programme. His success continued as he went on to become the Lab’s youngest Chartered Engineer and youngest Technical Manager.

The Sir George MacFarlane Award, which has only been running for three years, is open to all young UK engineers in the early stage of their career, less than eight years since graduation from a first degree in engineering. It is awarded to Young UK engineers who have demonstrated excellence in the early stages of their career.

Commenting on how it felt to win, Will said:

“It was a real surprise and I’m delighted to have won it. I’ve worked hard in my career and it’s nice to get some recognition for it. However, I don’t intend to stop there, my next goal is to be awarded fellowship of the IMechE (The Institution of Mechanical Engineers).”

NNL's Chief Engineer, Richard Taylor, commented:

“Will has made a major contribution to the NNL through his achievements and his character and has become an inspirational figure for other members of the laboratory’s staff.”
