Birchwood Park Based DV8 Begin Work on Major Refurbishment of Shalimar Bar, Restaurant and Lounge

Leading architecture and interior design practice DV8 Designs have begun work on a six-figure sum refurbishment of the Shalimar Bar, Restaurant and Lounge in Wilmslow.

This is the second outlet within the chain that the company has worked on, having recently transformed the popular Shalimar Restaurant in Upper Mill. The project will include expanding the existing building to increase its 150 seating capacity and giving it a more contemporary feeling, complete with new ceilings, floors, fixtures and fittings.

MD of DV8 Designs Lee Birchall said: “Differing from the ‘run of the mill’ Indian restaurants, Shalimar Bar, Restaurant and Lounge’s new look has been designed with a modern feel to encompass a wide range of clientele, who can enjoy fine Indian cuisine in the restaurant and Indian Tapas in the bar area.

“We’re delighted to be working on this project as we know that these design changes will dramatically enhance the overall business. Not only does it extend Shalimar’s offering, but it will also attract an increasing number of passing customers from within the area, which has a reputation for its high foot fall.”

Completion of the project is due next month (December) in time for the festive season.

DV8 Designs’ diverse portfolio includes residential, bars, restaurants, hotels, leisure centres, swimming pools, spas, golf clubs & offices.

Birchwood Park Business Announces Strategic Investment in New Manufacturing Facility for the UK Nuclear Market

Thomson House based NES are delighted to announce the strategic investment in four CNC machining centres for the manufacturing facility at the company’s headquarters in Wolverhampton. The investment is part of NES’ on-going commitment to developing a world class manufacturing facility for the UK nuclear market.

The purchase will strengthen NES’ position within the Nuclear Decommissioning and Defence markets. As one of the UK’s leading suppliers of fully integrated bespoke engineering solutions, the investment will complement the significant progress made in the development of NES’ supply chain partners.

The investment, in parallel with the work being carried out with the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, Nuclear (AMRC) in Sheffield, and NES’ enrolment to the National Skills Academy for Nuclear Manufacturing, helps position NES as a leading supplier of equipment to the UK Nuclear New Build market.

The first two machines, a Hartford Tornado HCMC13AG CNC Vertical Miller and a Hyundai Wia L300MC CNC Lathe, is scheduled for November delivery in 2012, with production availability in January 2013.

The third machine installed, will be a Hyundai Wia KBN135CL CNC Borer with installation in January 2013.

The final installation will be the largest of the machines in March 2013. A Soraluce SM10000 Fixed Table Travelling Column CNC Miller. This machine will have a 10m bed and significantly increase the size of items that can be machined by NES.

The new machines will have full CADCAM (Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing) capability, which will facilitate the seamless integration between engineering and manufacturing, allowing ProEngineer and AutoCAD models to be directly imported into the machines’ CNC programming system. NES will also use the machines to work on standalone “build to print” contracts, where NES involvement is through our manufacture and assembly expertise. The machines will also use an On Machine Verification (OMV) programme that allows initial checking of machined parts to be carried out in-situ, rather than having to transfer them to a co-ordinate measuring machine for inspection.

Commenting on the investment, NES Group Managing Director Mike Hawe, said “NES are committed to establishing a state of the art manufacturing base within the UK to support the growth ambitions of the company within the UK and European Nuclear New Build and Nuclear Decommissioning sectors. Key areas across the business have been identified where investment will further develop the NES product offering, providing our customers with the most innovative and best value solutions. It is an extremely exciting period in the history of NES, and the emergent opportunities in the Nuclear New Build market provide great development and growth potential for the business. We see the new manufacturing equipment as a key phase in the business’ growth, enabling NES to offer greater support to companies across operational sites as well as emergent Nuclear New Build opportunities”.

Alterations to the manufacturing facility infrastructure are scheduled to commence in October in order to accommodate the new machines. The existing machining capacity will be relocated, followed by significant alterations to the building services and floor loadings. The new layout will enable the seamless flow of machined items from the manufacturing area into the assembly bays.

This is the latest in a series of investments by NES to position itself at the forefront of the nuclear supply chain. Recent investments have included the expansion of the Centre of Engineering Excellence in the Thomson House building at Risley, opening of the NES North West Division in Beckermet, the closest facility of its type to the Sellafield site, and the development of an IMechE accredited Graduate Engineering scheme, something that NES plan to replicate across all the engineering disciplines.

Birchwood Park company DV8 Wins Commission to Design Gullivers Group’s First Hotel

Leading architecture and interior design practice DV8 Designs has unveiled its new look for the recently launched Gullivers World Hotel in Warrington.

The Birchwood Park based practice, which was established by Lee Birchall in 2006, spent a total of eight months working alongside Gullivers to help create a modern and contemporary feel within its lodge themed hotel. Their overall project included the design of the hotel reception, bar and restaurant as well as the design inspiration for its 50 bedrooms, which comprise of family rooms, doubles and twins and also six uniquely themed suites.

Primarily aimed at families, it is hoped that Gullivers will quickly become Cheshire's most unique hotel.

Managing Director of DV8 Designs Lee Birchall said: “It’s fantastic that Gulliver’s have had the confidence to work with a local architectural and interior design practice such as ours, rather than choose a nationally known practice to carry such an imaginative project. It goes to show Gullivers’ commitment and foresight to keep choosing local businesses, who intrinsically have Warrington’s interests at heart.”

DV8 Designs were commissioned to work on the hotel following the successful re-design of the Diamond Lil’s Restaurant, also based at Gullivers World. The DV8 team are now looking at designing the park’s newest addition – a restaurant entitled ‘Chef Gully's’.

Gullivers managing director Julie Dalton said: “It’s important for us to work with local businesses like DV8 Designs and we’re delighted with how the hotel has turned out – we look forward to welcoming customers to experience it.”

DV8 Designs’ diverse portfolio includes residential, bars, restaurants, hotels, leisure centres, swimming pools, spas, golf clubs & offices to find out more contact www.dv8-designs.co.uk

Birchwood Park Occupier National Nuclear Laboratory Joins Leading Global Nuclear Security Body

The UK's National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is pleased to announce that it has become a member of the World Institute of Nuclear Security (WINS).

WINS is an international forum within which nuclear security professionals can share experience and best practice, as well as learning from one another. There are over 1200 corporate and individual members of WINS around the world.

In addition to operating key nuclear R&D facilities in the UK, which handle sensitive materials such as uranium and plutonium, NNL is increasingly involved in the wider nuclear security sector as the provider of technical support and products which help to improve resilience in nuclear and related fields. Today's announcement follows previous collaboration between NNL and WINS in the field of human reliability assessment and a recognition that the two organisations have a number of areas of mutual interest and some common objectives.

NNL's Head of Security, Jeremy Davison, said today: "I am very pleased that NNL has joined WINS as a corporate member, in addition to the members of NNL's staff who were already individual members. In NNL we are increasingly involved in the security sector - both as an operator of facilities and as the provider of science and technology solutions. We are strong believers in the value of scientific and technical innovation in developing ever-improving security systems and methodologies for the protection of key materials and assets. We look forward to playing our part in the WINS network to help ensure the industry is as secure, robust and resilient as it can be."

Managing Director of NNL, Paul Howarth added: "Security is increasingly a fact of life in the 21st Century and nowhere more so than in the nuclear industry. I look forward to NNL's active participation in WINS as an international security organisation, both to share NNL expertise in security technology and its application, and to identify and utilise where appropriate, best practice from other members".

WINS Executive Director, Roger Howsley, commented: "I am delighted to welcome NNL to corporate membership of WINS, and I am looking forward to building on our previous links as we work together in future. There is a clear benefit in having good links between the science and security communities of the nuclear industry, both to enhance security performance and effectiveness and to ensure that the scientific community has a strong security culture."

Birchwood Park Occupier Opens Doors of Flagship Laboratory to UK Universities

The UK's National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), based here at Birchwood Park has opened its doors to leading academics from a host of universities, interested in bringing their own research to NNL's world-leading facilities. The open day at NNL's flagship Central Laboratory in Cumbria - a £250M state-of-the-art nuclear research facility - attracted around 25 representatives from 17 different universities.

Last month, NNL announced that access agreements to work in Central Laboratory had been signed, extending the existing agreement with The University of Manchester and opening up access for The University of Liverpool. These Licence to Occupy agreements have been made possible through an access agreement developed by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and The University of Manchester's Dalton Nuclear Institute, working with NNL. The longer-term intention is to broaden this access to any UK academic research groups who wish to do work with radioactive materials which they cannot do in their own university facilities. NNL's Central Laboratory combines with the new Dalton Cumbrian Facility, established by the Dalton Nuclear Institute and the NDA, to act as a national hub for active materials and chemistry research, with links to nuclear research facilities across the UK. This enhances the national capability and enables academics to access world-leading facilities in West Cumbria.

NNL's Central Laboratory is located on the Sellafield site in West Cumbria. It is managed by NNL and - like the rest of the Sellafield site - it is ultimately owned by the NDA. The access agreements with universities are possible as a result of agreement and support from NDA and The University of Manchester. In all, a total of 10% of the Central Laboratory is available for academic research and access can be made available to any UK universities.

Leigh Wakefield, NNL's Facilities and Safety Director, said: "I am delighted that so many academics have shown interest in following in the footsteps of Manchester and Liverpool. NNL has a specific remit from the Department of Energy and Climate Change to enable the use of our unique facilities by others and this open day is another major step towards that goal. We are looking forward to working with many of the attendees, and their colleagues, in the future as they bring their research work to the Central Laboratory."

Prof Andrew Sherry, Director of the Dalton Nuclear Institute, commented: "We have already had the chance to do some important work in the Central Laboratory and have found the experience to be very valuable. These facilities are comparable to anything in the world and it is a fantastic opportunity for UK universities to have access to the Central Laboratory available to us. It allows us to boost the quality, quantity and impact of the research work we do in the nuclear field. We have been very impressed with the level of training and supervision which our researchers have received from NNL, and the individuals who have worked here have gained an invaluable insight into what it is like to work in a real nuclear facility, with all of the safety, security and other issues involved."

More benefits for Birchwood Park customers as new garage opens

Offering yet another service to occupiers of MEPC Birchwood Park, new garage Capper Jackson has opened its doors on site, its local owners determined not only to succeed in a recession, but to challenge the perception of the trade.

Established by Warrington man Neal Jackson (25) and Tom Capper (24) from Middlewich, Capper Jackson launched in October in 5,600 sq ft premises at Unit C, Lovell House.

The company’s selection of MEPC Birchwood Park was largely the result of the park’s accessibility, both to suppliers and customers, including the Park’s 5,000-strong workforce which offers the business a customer base on its doorstep.

It was also the result of the founders’ determination to challenge the image of garages. Explained Neal: “Many people think of garages as small and a bit tatty. We wanted smart, spacious premises in well-kept surroundings, to inspire customer confidence and present more like a dealer. At the same time, we needed something affordable in order to be able to provide our clients with a high quality, affordable service. MEPC Birchwood Park offered all of this and more, the on-site facilities are also ideal for any customers traveling in off the Park; people can grab a Starbucks coffee in comfort at The Centre or even work out in gym while they wait for a service or MOT.”

Added Tom: “Starting up a business in a recession definitely has its risks, but we are determined to succeed and have every confidence that we are in the right place to do so. We offer a really brilliant level of service, as our customers will quickly learn. The survival of the local economy depends on the success of young businesses like ours.”

Added MEPC Birchwood Park managing director, Jonathan Walsh: “Capper Jackson is a marvellous new service for the park; it will be so convenient for our occupiers to drop their cars off for a service or a valet as they arrive at work and then collect them on their way home. It just all helps improve the work life balance, which is so important when we all lead such busy lives.

“We are delighted that Capper Jackson has chosen to set up here. The park has a long track-record of welcoming and encouraging new businesses. Our flexible approach to their property requirements helps them not only to become established but also to grow on site.

“We hope that this deal marks the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship.”
